Later in history, Polish-British anthropologist Bronisław Kasper Malinowski observed "small talk" from an anthropological perspective. Malinowski's 1923 essay "The Problem of Meaning in Primitive Languages" addressed the purpose and value of small chat for effective communication in business. In his essay, he stated that "small talk" did not communicate knowledge but fostered bonds of personal togetherness. He referred to this form of connection as "phatic communion," which derives from the Greek term "phatos," meaning "spoken." According to Malinowski, small chat satisfies one of humanity's most basic needs: the desire for company, making "small talk" a kind of social bonding rather than communication. While small conversations may appear insignificant, they play an essential function in social interactions by facilitating connections without breaking boundaries.
